493: The Return

The public debut of Durango and Silverton 493 happened on Presidents Day weekend of 2020, and the debut was to be part of the Photographer’s Weekend Festivities. Instead, a heavy crowd that arrived for the regular revenue trains that weekend ended up pressing the 493 into service two days earlier than expected to handle the longer trains. 493 is seen here in repose at the Durango Roundhouse after one of those first runs.

Oiling The Oil Burner

The Appearing Apparition

With it’s servicing complete at the coal dock (no coal needed, only sand will be taken here), the 493 backs towards the turntable to be turned and set up for the stall it will spend the night inside.

The Harbinger

TIn February of 2020, and old face returned to Durango Colorado in the form of K-37 493 under steam. Only now its vow of silence has been broken by the voice of a oil burning firebox at its heart instead of the hand fed coal consumer. In the roundhouse are other Durango and Silverton locomotives undergoing winter maintenance and oil conversions.
