San Luis & Rio Grande
The San Luis & Rio Grande is a short line operating in the San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado, with its main line draped over the scenic La Veta Pass to reach the Union Pacific tracks at Walsenburg. For a few months, during the Summer of 2008, I was employed there as a hostler for the Steam Locomotive crew. During downtime, I was able to hop aboard some fo the photo specials that ran over the line.
During my short stint was the first year of operation for the SL&RG #18, an American Locomotive Company (ALCO) product of 1910. The locomotive was familiar to myself as it ran for years on the Grand Canyon Railway in Northern Arizona, and actually left the property while I was employed there.
